So Youve Been Promoted to Manager...Now What

So Youve Been Promoted to Manager...Now WhatSo Youve Been Promoted to Manager...Now WhatHey, look at that, you got a promotion Congrats With that title change, youve managed to score a larger paycheck, bigger office, and invitations to all the senior class events. When it comes to career goals, youve finally made it. Before you go popping that champagne cork, however, theres a teeny, tiny, itsy, bitsy detail that your company forgot to mention youre a manager.Making that leap to management can be an exciting career step, but it also brings with it a whole host of additional responsibilities. The first and foremost is a gruppe of your very own employees, ready, willing and able to execute your game plan. You do have a plan, dont you? If the reality of more responsibility is starting to work its way in, never fear. Simply Hired has a suite of funkfernsprecher tips to help you navigate the leadership minefield and come out prepared and ready to continue climbing that corporate ladder.Ge tting to Know Your TeamThe first step you should take when landing a management role should involve getting your workforce in order. If you havent been at the company long or were promoted from a different division, take some time to get to know your individual team members. Each individual employee will have their individual duties, responsibilities and working styles. To help get the best wertzuwachs out of your crew as possible, and to help build trust and dedication, try scheduling one on one meetings. Coffee or lunch meetings are also helpful as long as your tone stays on professional topics. Assess their individual strengths and take the time to ask if they have any feedback on the position as it stands or any concerns about the transition. Setting the foundation with your team at the outset will pay off huge dividends if and when you start implementing your own program.Setting a Leadership ToneDuring the first few weeks as a newly minted manager, its important to set a profes sional and authoritative tone that builds trust within your team. You will also want to establish a hierarchy, with yourself as a leader of the group. This step is especially important if your employees used to be fellow coworkers at a non-management level. Many of the group may still want to socialize or commiserate the way you all did together in the past. Creating some professional distance and hard boundaries, however, will help make yours and your individual reports work lives less complicated and happier in the long run. Delegating, Assignments, and DeadlinesAnother big skill most employees need to learn when jumping to the management role is the ability to delegate tasks. As a non-management employee, youre most likely used to taking direction from others and while you may have made suggestions you certainly were removed from the decision making process. In your first few weeks as manager, make a list of tasks currently performed by your group or that will need to be performed as part of a new plan. Have regular meetings and assign individual members behauptung tasks along with a deadline for completion. In addition to initial tasks, dont be afraid to break out portions of requests that come across your desk to more junior level team members. This will not only empress the hierarchy to your team, it will also keep your time free for planning and implementing any necessary changes.Communication is a MustIf youve been following along closely youve probably sensed a theme in all of the above suggestions that bears focusing on in its very own topic. Communication is one of the key skills any manager can learn and develop in order to effectively navigate having direct reports. Set clear guidelines for performance and give hard deadlines for completion of projects. If youd like to know your teams regular working hours, dont be afraid to ask. Last but not least, consider scheduling regular weekly or monthly team meetings to check in on the status of projects an d to address any concerns your team members may have. Always be sure to set an agenda and call for agenda items in advance to provide a valuable guide to the discussion and to help avoid wasting time.Odds and EndsLast but not least are the peripheral tasks that come along with a promotion to manager. In some cases, this step up may mean that youve made the move from hourly to salary with a similar flexibility of scheduling. Despite the new bedarfsweise hours, be sure to check in with your report to clarify the expectations of when you are to be in your newly improved office seat.Management can also come with a host of HR and administrative duties. Performance reviews are typically required yearly and are a critical part of the leadership process in that they help both you evaluate your reports and help your reports provide feedback on their job. Some companies may require managers to approve time cards, salary raises, and yearly bonuses. Scheduling your teams time off will also now be mission critical to avoid staffing shortages. Finally, many companies require managers to submit yearly budgets with line items dedicated to staffing, software needs, or project-specific funds. If youve never prepared a budget before, seek assistance from your senior manager or an HR representative well in advance to avoid any surprises.Closing ThoughtsOverall a promotion to manager is a positive experience. It signals that your organization has faith in your skills and abilities and is ready to have you increase your responsibility by having a team and department of your very own. Dont let the changes and prep work you may need to do scare you out of a celebration. Keep our handy advice in mind and youll be well on your way to working yourwayup the management track.

5 Ways Recruiters Find Candidates

5 Ways Recruiters Find Candidates 5 Ways Recruiters Find Candidates Recruiters succeed whereapplicant tracking systems (ATS) fail. While ATS have the ability to store and sift through resumes based on desired skills, they alone cannot make final judgment calls about candidates. Because applicant tracking systems have flaws, thankfully, recruiters do not rely solely upon them for finding candidates.Recruiters use a variety of sourcing techniques to find strong candidates for jobs. As a job seeker, you should always compare your resume against job descriptions when you apply to jobs online. But, understanding the other ways in which recruiters search for candidates can help you conduct a thorough job search beyondapplying to advertised positions.Types of recruitersThere are two primary types of recruiters agency orinternal. Both types of recruiters fulfill staffing needs but who they staff for is different. Agency recruiters work at staffing firms that specialize in finding candidates within a specific industry. While they usually specialize in an industry like marketing or technology, they recruit for multiple, if not dozens of companies within that given field. Internal recruiters work for only one company, providing hiring sttze for a variety of open roles within their company.Agency recruiters often focus on depth, i.e. finding Java developers if they work for a technical staffing firm, while internal recruiters focus on breadth, i.e. finding both a sales manager and a public relations specialist for their company. Most companies utilize a combination of internal and agency recruiters for any given role.Whether they work for an agency or a company, most recruiters use a combination of these techniques to findcandidates1. Job boards and career sitesRecruiters often rely upon sites such as Career Builder, Monster, Dice, and Indeed to find candidates who arent in their internal applicant tracking system. Unlike a company ATS, which only contains the resumes of c andidates who have applied to jobs at their company, job board and career site databases contain millions of resumes that span different industries, experience levels, and geographical locations. They are a gold mine for recruiters trying to find the perfect candidate for a role.Large career sites such as Career Builder facilitate a passive approach to landing jobs by asking you, the user, to upload your resume into their database. Resumes stored into their database are then available to recruiters and companies who pay for access to search their bank of resumes.Uploading your resume to career boards is particularly good if youre a candidate who prefers a passive job search. If youre in no rush to leave your current role but would move companies for the right opportunity, this is way to keep that possibility open. Having your resume in these databases means recruiters can find you if theres an opportunity that might be a good match for your qualifications. Take the time to craft an outstanding resume that recruiters wont pass up once theyve got it in their hands. On these job boards your resume will likely be searched with a Boolean or string search, meaning a combination of keywords and phrases in a search will result in your resume coming to the top of the pile. Its important to tailor your resume to your desired job title before hosting it on a job board so your matches are accurate and youre being seen in the system.2. LinkedInOne of the most popular recruiting tools these days is LinkedIn because of its ease of use. LinkedIn makes it easy for recruiters, who usually have a Recruiter account, to search for candidates based on their work history, job title, or college. One of the primary advantages for recruiters is finding qualified candidates on LinkedIn who would be otherwise impossible to locate because they arent actively looking for jobs. Same goes here as job boards make sure your LinkedIn profile accurately represents what youre looking for, so that youre showing up in recruiter searches.Update your LinkedIn profile regularly, providing a detailed account of your work history and professional accomplishments. Even if you are happily employed, LinkedIn is a priceless tool for future job hunds and a great way to stay in touch with your professional network- and theres always a chance that a recruiter will contact you about an opportunity you wouldnt have otherwise heard about. If youre an active job seeker, join- and participate in- relevant LinkedIn groups. To start, look for groups related to your industry, alma mater, or geographic area. Bulk up your profile by taking steps such as adding your volunteer work or attaching work samples. Network with professionals in your field and search for recruiters that staff for positions in your industry. Be proactive and let them know youre open to hearingfrom potential recruiters.3. Applicant tracking systemsAt some point in their search, most recruiters will run keyword searches to find candidates in their applicant tracking system (ATS). ATS parse resumes submitted online and store the information in their database. When a recruiter has an open role, they can easily run keyword searches in the ATS and it will populate and rank a list of candidates whose resumes contain those keywords. The best way to rank highly in applicant tracking systems is tomake sure the content of your resume closely matches the job description. To see how well your resume is aligned with a job, try the resume analysis tool fromJobscan. By optimizing your resume keywords the first time you submit your resume to a company, you should come up as a candidate for future opportunities that also closely match your skill set.4. Networking eventsWhile technology has made it easier to both find jobs and find candidates, it hasnt replaced the value of face-to-face networking. Job fairs, conferences, meet-ups, and other industry networking events are still the best way to make connections, for both rec ruiters and candidates. Specific industry or event-related networking opportunities are always best, recruiters are everywhere and impressing them with industry know-how before you mention youre on the hunt makes a lasting impression.Recruiters attend these types events toNetwork with active job seekersMeet professionals in the industry they staff forIdentify candidates who are strongly engaged for future hiring purposesLearn mora about positions in the field that they hire forActive job seekers should attend these events to make as many connections as possible with recruiters and professionals in their industry. Bring plenty of business cards and copies of yournetworking resume, but remember to play it cool and dont act like youre looking to take advantage. Networking is all about the relationship. After networking events, follow up with the contacts you made while they still have you fresh in their memory. For non-active job seekers, attend one or two industry events a year just to stay abreast of new developments in your field and expand your professional network. Those contacts may come in handy at a future time when you are looking for new opportunities.5. Employee referralsRecruiters love working with candidates referred to them by internal employees at their company, or candidates theyve previously placed. Referrals tend to be strong candidates because theyre reliable enough to that someone is willing to vouch for them. In order to attract more referral candidates, many companies offer a monetary incentive for their employees to recommend people from their network for open roles. Recruiters can save a lot of time hunting down candidates when they get referrals passed along to them. The moral of the story for job seekers is that its not only what you know, but who you know. Tell your family and friends when you are looking for new opportunities in case they hear of anything. Personal connections make a huge difference when you are looking for a job. 80 per cent of open positions are never even advertised, according to Forbes. Instead of just tapping into the 20 percent of jobs that anyone can apply for online, tap into your network and ask if everyone you know if they can refer you to a hiring manager or recruiter at their company. Truly, ask everyone just do it politely. Research has shown that acquaintances- whose social and professional circles dont have as much overlap with yours as those of your close friends and family- are more likely to connect people to new jobs.Recruiting is really like sales, recruiters are selling you the position and selling candidates to the Hiring Managers. Most recruiters, regardless of whether they work internally for a company or at an agency, will engage in multiple sourcing techniques so they can find the best possible candidates to sell upwards. Understanding how recruiters findcandidates can help you, as a job seeker, speed up the process and probability of finding an opportunity you love.

Maybe this is what you are missing in your life

Maybe this is what you are missing in yur lifeMaybe this is what you are missing in your lifeTherbeie was a large tree in the woods behind my parents house. It rose above the other trees and was my favorite. There were summer days before dusk when I would retreat to that tree.Id scale its branches to the top, looking out over a canopy of foliage. Id close my eyes and listen to the breeze dance through the leaves. Sitting securely in my wooded loft, Id feel the tree gently sway back and forth. It was so calm and peaceful. One time, I was beside the tree when a doe emerged out of the brush. She slowly came towards me. I stood motionless beside the tree trunk, knowing that any movement would startle her.The doe walked within a yard of me, stopping to sniff and flit her large ears back and forth. Surely she caught my scent, but didnt scare. Perhaps she sensed my benevolent heart. The encounter was exhilarating. It made me feel so alive.Stand by meI was reminded of that moment later in life , when I saw the movie Stand By Me. The film is a moving, coming of age story based on Stephen Kings novella The Body.Theres a scene in the movie when one of the boys, named Gordie, is apart from his friends. Gordie encounters a doe that crosses by him on some railroad tracks. Watch this brief scene below.Gordie decides leid to tell his companions about the deer he saw. A creative boy, he realizes the others will not understand or entirely appreciate what he felt. Its a beautiful scene in the movie and one I relate to from my own deer encounter.Experiencing such close proximity with nature touches you. Its not really the call of the wild so much as a whisper. Something on a deep, primal nature glides serenely into your presence. Its like all the energy and mystery of life takes a moment to greet you. Being Authoritative with Grace in the Workplace

Being Authoritative with Grace in the Workplace Being Authoritative with Grace in the Workplace So how does one go about asserting authority without becoming the enemy? The following five suggestions should help anyone looking to improve his or her ability to lead a team while improving output and inspiring loyalty.1. Avoid mixed messages at all costs. Dont be overly apologetic, make constant excuses, or be wishy-washy when giving instructions or other orders. Phrases that fit this description include, Im sorry to ask you this but would you, I feel bad about this but, and I wouldnt be asking you except that.2. In contrast to that sort of diluted gestalt of directive, be clear and direct with your communications. Before you confront anyone, prepare what you are going to say ahead of time so that you can work out the most direct and clear manner to present the information. You want others to feel that you know exactly what you want, what you need them to do, and how you feel about th em as a team member. The more confidence you inspire, the more people will believe you and following your instructions perfectly.3. Being concise with your directors helps them to be more impactful and more easily understood in their instruction. The fewer words you are able to use, the more efficient your use of language will be and the less time you will spend speaking instead of listening. After all, the more you listen the better you will understand the progress and pitfalls your plans have produced.4. A behavior that can be nearly as counterproductive as being pushy and mean is to fawn or be overly affectionate with people. The key to being effectively assertive is to remain positive at all times without being ingratiating. Politeness, smiling, and regular recognition for the efforts of others will keep your people feeling valued without being inappropriate.5. Finally, never give the impression that you are unable to give your full attention to anyone you are directing. Looking directly at someone and offering your attention will help them take you seriously and feel as though they matter. Speaking unclearly or hastily while otherwise occupied gives the impression that you dont mean what you say and that you, yourself, are not taking your instructions seriously.

MAVNI Program

MAVNI Program MAVNI Program In 2008, the Secretary of Defense authorized a pilot program called Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI). The goal of the program was to bring individuals fluent in languages the U.S. military considered critical as well as those with health care training, into the Armed Forces. This program was aimed at nonresident legal immigrants who had been living in the United States legally for at least two years and was initiated to enhance military readiness.  It brought more than 10,000 people into the ranks during its existence, but MAVNI was frozen in 2016. Standards for Noncitizen Enlistment The Enlistment Qualification Standards for the U.S. Military state, “In order to join the U.S. Military, you must either be a U.S. citizen, or you must be a legal permanent immigrant, physically living in the United States, with a Green Card. And, generally, that remains true- the recruiting manuals make the same statement.  But the MAVNI program sought to diversify the militarys personnel by altering these standards for certain positions. The aim was to recruit people with needed medical or dental skills and training as well as people with critical foreign language and culture skills.  In return for their service, those enlisting through this program were able to apply for U.S. citizenship on an expedited basis. The U.S. Army was the first branch to implement the program in 2009, and the Navy joined the initiative soon after, though as a whole, the Army was the main participating branch of service in MAVNI. Military Jobs and MAVNI Health care professionals who enlisted as officers (the Army is the only service where individuals must enlist first, before attending Officer Candidate School), were required to serve either three years of active duty or six years in the Reserves. Immigrants who enlisted based on their language skills were required to serve for a minimum of four years of active duty.   Participants who failed to serve their term of service could lose their citizenship; in fact, citizenship granted as a part of the MAVNI program could possibly be revoked if the person was separated from the Armed Forces under other than honorable conditions before the five-year mark. MAVNI Frozen Indefinitely In 2012 the MAVNI program was renewed, expanded and extended again in 2014.   In 2016, after implementing more stringent background check requirements, the Obama administration froze the program, leaving several thousand recruits without any way to advance. The terms of the MAVNI program required participants to begin boot camp within three years of their enlistment. Most of the last batch of MAVNI recruits timed out of the service while awaiting the background check process to be completed. In 2018 under the Trump administration, the Army began discharging soldiers who had enlisted under the MAVNI program. Most were reportedly not given notice of why they were being discharged, but their citizenship status was jeopardized as a result. Many of them had served honorably in Afghanistan, Iraq and other locations around the world. As of January 2019, the program remains closed and there do not appear to be any plans for its revival.

5 Tips For Working with Difficult People

5 Tips For Working with Difficult People 5 Tips For Working with Difficult People Kathis tips on dealing with difficult people: 1 â€" Don’t react in the heat of the moment It’s so tempting when dealing with a difficult person to let them have it, but that never works.   You know what happens, you end up getting in trouble because you were heard fighting with a co-worker.   So, take a few minutes or even a day to cool off, exercise, do some deep breathing, put the issue in perspective before you say anything. 2 â€" When speaking to a difficult person address the facts, not their personality Once you get personal with a difficult person you are in for a battle.   For example, if a difficult co-worker does not deliver their report to you when it’s due. Never say “you always deliver your work late, you are such a problem.” Instead say, I may have misunderstood something, but I expected that report yesterday, when can I expect it?” 3 â€" Set clear boundaries with this person and then reinforce those boundaries as needed A difficult person has a tendency to not respect boundaries, whether it’s your personal space, being late, or simply not having manners.   Whatever it is, if you do not set boundaries they will not set them for themselves.   For example, if a work with someone who arrives 15 minutes late to every meeting with you, instead of being mad you can say “ I have limited time to meet with you and it’s important that our meetings start on time, so the next time you are more then 10 minutes late I would like to reschedule.” I promise this works for a while then you may have to say it again. 4 â€" Don’t take their behavior personally I know this is easier said then done.   But, you have no reason to take this persons behavior personally, because they treat everyone this way.   They treated people before you arrived like this and they will treat people after you are long gone this way, IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU. 5 â€" Learn to detach Detaching is when you understand that you cannot change a difficult people.   Understanding this should give you great relief.   How they behave is not your responsibility. Employers and dates want to hear about your struggles, study finds

Employers and dates want to hear about your struggles, study finds Employers and dates want to hear about your struggles, study finds Americans are transfixed by the geniuses who roam among us. But when it comes to our everyday lives, a recent study finds we prefer the people who admit they’ve put effort into making it.The article, published in bi-monthly journal Basic and Applied Social Psychology, dispels preconceived notions some people have about how to impress a potential employer, or even a date. Though we may be inclined to mask our shortcomings, the author’s experiments actually indicate that showing some vulnerability can help us win people over.Talent’s not enoughIt’s true that when we stress our natural talent, we tend to be perceived as more competent. But while it’s obviously a plus to be capable, talent and competence aren’t what makes someone like us. Especially in communities that emphasize a Protestant work ethic, we’re more likable when we admit we had to work hard for what we’ve achieved. The same goes for our personal lives: People would rather date someone who struggles than some one who is inherently talented. That means it’s finally okay to be human! There’s no need for perfection; in fact, it may work against us.What about gender?Given that women are less likely to emphasize their accomplishments, we might expect that they’re more inclined to talk about the effort it takes to succeed. But in this study, the author found negligible difference in how each gender chose to talk about their achievements. So though it may be more difficult to get women to vocalize what they do right, once they do, their explanations are similar to the ones used by their male counterparts.

Keeping Score at Work Isnt Doing You Any Favors (Even if You Have the Most Points)

Keeping Score at Work Isnt Doing You Any Favors (Even if You Have the Most Points) Keeping Score at Work Isnt Doing You Any Favors (Even if You Have the Most Points) Who does the most work in the office? Who gets the most attention? Who does most of the cleaning in the house? Who buys the most presents? Who calls who the most? The answer is this: No one cares about the silly scorecards inside your brain. When people keep score, there’s only one outcome: resentment. In social psychology, that’s called the “egocentric bias.” The term was first used by Michael Ross and Fiore Sicoly in a 1979 study. They looked at stuff like cooking, making decisions, causing arguments, or any other things that are a part of relationships and found that nearly 75% of married couples overestimated their contribution to the relationship. Basically, it’s natural for us to take credit for achievements and blame others for losses. We’re not aware of our egocentric attitudes. That’s why you have to train yourself to stop keeping score. It’s unhealthy and only causes conflicts. You Have Nothing to Prove I think there’s a relationship between keeping score and self-confidence. Keeping score is something you do to prove a point and feel good about yourself over someone else. But here’s the thing: If you’re confident, and you believe in your ability, there’s nothing to prove. Just play your part. It’s none of your business how others behave. If you’re upset about something, that’s an entirely different story. If you feel that your colleague is doing less work than you, say it. Don’t get all frustrated by convincing yourself that you do it all and there’s nothing you can do about it. When it comes to work, people may say: “You deserve more money because you do all the work.” “You should stop working hard because they don’t value you.” You might think your friend is giving you good advice, but this type of thinking isn’t helpful at all. I’ll keep it real with you: don’t complain- act. Play the Long Game and Collaborate I’m not saying that it’s OK if you’re in an unequal relationship, personally or professionally. But life isn’t fair. Either change it or get out. Stop thinking in concepts like “fair.” It’s completely meaningless and has no useful function. It only causes conflict because it’s subjective. Instead, I look at relationships like a long-term collaboration. I don’t worry about keeping score, because I know that, over a lifetime, the score will always be equal- because we all chase the same goals. In the end, everything will even out anyway. Just do what you have to do, and don’t think about who did the most work. If you really want to achieve things in life and get actual work done, you have to collaborate with others. You’ll never achieve something on your own. Keeping score is a dangerous trait that you should avoid at all costs. You have the ability to change yourself, but ultimately you can’t change others. You can only make them aware of something. If others decide to change, that’s great. If not, that’s not your problem. Just understand that this is your life, and that means you decide who you spend your time with. And if you want to achieve something that matters, you have to surround yourself with good people. People who care about collective results. This article was originally published on DariusForoux.com. It has been republished here with permission. Hidden Job Market

Hidden Job Market Hidden Job Market Definition: The so-called hidden job market refers to the large number of job openings that either are not advertised publicly or which are done so only as a perfunctory formality to satisfy corporate human resources department rules. In many of the latter cases, the hiring manager already has decided upon a specific person for the position in question, and applications from others are summarily rejected for one purported reason or another. Indeed, under the latter scenario, a lengthy list of pseudo-requirements frequently are attached to the job advertisement, and they typically mirror precisely the background of the preferred, predetermined job candidate. The large scope of the hidden job market is yet another example of the importance of networking  in uncovering career opportunities. Also see our related discussion regarding  workplace sponsors and the clout that they exercise in the hiring process. Jobs Created for Specific Persons: One aspect of the hidden job market is the creation of new positions earmarked for certain persons. In this situation, a manager may learn that a particularly talented person is available, and goes ahead to create an opening tailored for that person. In such cases, the manager in question may not have an immediate need for a new person on staff, but sees the longer term value in bringing that specific person on board. To gain the services of that person in a timely fashion, before he or she has time to consider other possible offers, the hiring manager may seek to circumvent normal corporate rules for advertising job openings publicly. Such circumventions, not surprisingly, tend to be more common the more highly placed and influential the hiring manager is. Effect of Labor Market Conditions: The weaker the job market is (that is, the less hiring is done in the aggregate versus the number of job seekers; stated differently, the higher the unemployment rate is in a given field), the more common it is for jobs to be filled in this relatively informal fashion. As a result, applying for many advertised job openings actually is a complete waste of time, since hiring decisions already have been made before these postings see the light of day. By contrast, in strong economic periods, where unemployment is low, employers typically are compelled to advertise publicly to fill job openings. Extent of the Hidden Job Market: Outplacement executive Duncan Mathison, author of Unlock the Hidden Job Market, published in 2009, estimates that about half of all jobs are filled outside a formal, open and competitive job posting process. He bases his estimate on a combination of labor statistics and recruitment surveys. One of Mathisons methods is to compare data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on employers planned hiring in the next month with their actual hiring. If a firm takes on more new employees than its estimated hiring, he draws the conclusion that the excess represents the filling of unadvertised jobs. The HR Response: Human resources professionals defend an open process of advertising for job candidates as a way to open up the pool of prospective talent, and to increase the odds that the most qualified person is indeed hired in the end. Moreover, they caution that a closed process, in which jobs are not filled in a competitive fashion, can increase the risk that the firm will face (and lose) lawsuits over discriminatory hiring practices, or be subject to audit by the federal Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EEOC) and its counterparts in state and local governments. When HR rules force the advertisement of a job that actually is already earmarked for a specific person, this creates a so-called phantom job posting. This represents a closely related issue in corporate hiring practices. Tapping the Hidden Job Market: Among the strategies recommended by experts are: Network regularly with managers in your company, so that they have you in mind should an opening occur in their areas.Think about the types of jobs that could use your skills and experience, the companies where someone like you is apt to succeed, and the types of managers (and management models) under which you would thrive.Speak candidly with your boss to determine whether you are a likely candidate for promotion in your current organization.Attend events in your industry or field, and make contacts with hiring managers, not fellow job seekers. Executive Assistant Salary and Duties for 2019

Executive Assistant Salary and Duties for 2019 Executive Assistant Salary and Duties for 2019 As an administrative assistant, your skills are top-notch. But are they strong enough to move up to an executive assistant position? Both roles involve many of the same abilities and experience, but there are some differences in the types of duties each is expected to handle; hence, the higher executive assistant salary. Typically, the duties of an executive assistant include clerical, administrative and logistical support for executive management, along with supervision of office staff. Most employers expect to see at least some college experience on the resumes of executive assistants. What executive assistant salary can you expect? With increasing levels of responsibility come rising salaries. The midpoint starting salary (or median national salary) for an executive assistant in the United States is $53,250, according to the 2019 OfficeTeam Salary Guide. An administrative assistant can expect a salary of $35,750 at the midpoint, which is the level at which candidates have average experience with the necessary skills to meet the job requirements, in an industry where competition for talent is moderate. An executive assistant salary can rise even higher at the senior executive assistant level, which pays $61,250 at the midpoint. The responsibilities are similar, but a senior executive assistant supports the most senior executives, particularly in large corporations, and is expected to have specific industry expertise. Use our Salary Calculator to find executive assistant salary information for your market. Typical duties of an executive assistant While responsibilities differ depending on the specific needs of a company, department or executive, you can expect to perform these kinds of activities: Performing office and administrative duties to assist executive management, such as managing calendars, organizing files and making travel, meeting and event arrangements Attending meetings and taking detailed notes Preparing reports and financial data Training and supervising other support staff Screening calls and maintaining client/customer relations Monitoring supplies and inventory and placing purchase orders SEARCH EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT JOBS In-demand skills for executive assistants Here are seven skills and abilities employers typically look for in an executive assistant: Versatility and flexibility. The responsibilities of executive assistants vary greatly and are rarely the same each day. They must be resourceful and adaptable enough to handle tasks ranging from the mundane to the more complex on a daily basis. From screening calls to organizing documents for a board meeting, a first-rate executive assistant must be prepared to help out in areas like corporate responsibility, budgeting, hiring and social media. Verbal and written communication skills. A large part of the job involves speaking with employees and stakeholders at all levels, from shareholders to mailroom employees, and clients to top executives. Executive assistants also need to write memos and letters, and prepare reports and information for distribution. Whatever the means of communication, the ability to be clear and concise is frequently at the top of an employer's checklist when hiring for this role. Strong technical know-how. An executive assistant's computer proficiency must extend beyond spreadsheet management and word processing. Executive assistants often use their computer-based skills to maintain company records, set up filing systems or digitally manage daily operations. They may also be asked to take on special projects typically outside the realm of the administrative assistant, such as conducting market research for statistical reports. Excellent interpersonal skills. Executive assistants are often required to work closely with other staff members, so it's important for them to relate well with people. For example, sometimes they may be charged with managing or training lower-level administrative staff. Strong people skills are also a must for interacting with clients and vendors. Discretion regarding confidential matters. Executive assistants must be committed to maintaining strict confidentiality regarding any “inside” information they may be privy to. Working with senior managers and CEOs, they might hear about sensitive issues, such as upcoming personnel changes or company trade secrets, and it's essential they can be relied upon for absolute discretion. Organizational abilities. Depending on the company and role, an executive assistant may be expected to coordinate key projects, such as coming up with solutions to office-related issues. They may be charged with finding a better way to track employee's travel expenses or planning a firm's annual party for employees, which requires managing the catering budget, finding a facility and sending invitations. They also may coordinate vacation schedules and training for technology and software. The ability to lead. Executive assistants often manage the administrative assistants in their group, whether formally or informally. They may be expected to provide guidance and training for administrative assistants, and even to help hire new assistants when there's an opening on the team. If you're thinking of making the move from administrative to executive assistant, you'll need to sharpen your skills accordingly to meet the demands of the job and earn the added compensation that goes along with it. How to Show Your Personality in a Cover Letter

How to Show Your Personality in a Cover Letter How to Show Your Personality in a Cover Letter Hiring managers read dozens, if not hundreds, of applications for every job they post. If you want to get the job, you have to stand out. It’s important to show the hiring manager not only that you are qualified, but also that you are the best candidate for the position. What should you say in your cover letter to help it get noticed? One way is to write a unique, engaging cover letter that shows not only your qualifications but also your personality. Go beyond some of the clichéd, formulaic language found in many letters. If you make your personality stand out in your letter, the hiring manager will more likely give your application a second look. Of course, there is also such a thing as putting too much personality in your letter. You want to remain professional, and focus on what makes you an ideal candidate. Find the right balance between showing your personality and being professional in your cover letter, and you will be on your way to a job interview. Here are tips for showing your personality in a cover letter. Write a Unique Cover Letter The best way to show who you are to the company is to avoid writing one generic cover letter for every job listing. Instead, tailor your letter to the specific job and company. You can write a targeted cover letter in a number of ways. Include keywords from the job listing in your letter. You can also reference the company itselfâ€"for example, mention a particular success the company has had, or explain why you are interested in working for the company. Perhaps most importantly, send your letter to a specific person, if possible. If you have to, do some digging to find the name of the hiring manager, and address your letter to him or her. Avoid the phrase “To whom it may concern” â€" this shows a hiring manager that you have not taken the time to write a unique cover letter for the specific job. Avoid Clichés One of the best ways to avoid sounding like everyone else in your cover letter is to leave out some of the most overused phrases in cover letters. For example, don’t say you are a “hard worker” or that you “go above and beyond.” Try to find unique ways to explain who you are. One way to do this is to focus on particular examples â€" show them who you are, rather than tell them. Try a Creative First Sentence So many cover letters start with the sentence, “I am applying for X position.” While this is a fine way to start, the hiring manager has likely seen this sentence hundreds of times. Try starting with a more engaging first sentence (or first sentences) that shows who you are. You might express why you are passionate about the job or the company. For example, you could start, “I have always been a storyteller. As a child, I would write countless stories about princes and princesses. Now, I have turned my passion for storytelling into a career in marketing.” Or, “When I first researched your company for a project in a business class over five years ago, I became inspired by your mission to provide low-cost tech solutions.” A great “hook” will keep the hiring manager reading and will show him or her a bit about why you are a good fit for the job and company. Make a Connection If you know anyone at the company, or if someone at the company referred you to the job, mention this early on in your cover letter (ideally in the first couple of sentences). This humanizes you, and makes you seem more like you are already a part of the company culture. It also shows that someone in the company already thinks you are qualified for the job. Think of Unique Examples Remember that a cover letter should not simply restate your resume. While your resume lists your qualifications, your cover letter goes deeper, providing examples of times you demonstrated particular skills and abilities necessary for the job. One way to show your personality is to include some unique, even surprising, examples that demonstrate your skills. For example, if you are applying for a job that requires organizational skills, you might mention how you accurately manage and process dozens of monthly shipments from your Etsy account. These kinds of examples are particularly useful if you do not have much relevant work experience. Of course, only include examples that are relevant â€" they need to connect back to a skill or trait necessary for the job. Show You’ll Fit in With the Company Culture Hiring managers want to know not only that you are qualified, but also that you will fit in with the company culture. Before writing your letter, research the organization. Check out the company’s website, and talk to anyone you know who works there. Then you can mention ways that you might fit into the culture. For example, if you know they do a lot of after-work team sports, you might briefly mention at the end of the letter that you would love to put your pitching skills to good use. Some job listings also give you a peek into the company culture. For example, if the listing itself is very silly or funny, feel free to add a little humor to your letter, if that feels natural. Tailor Your Tone to Fit the Industry Similarly, you can tailor your letter to fit the personality of the industry. If you are applying for a corporate job, for example, you might want to write a more traditional cover letter. You can still include some personal examples, and maybe a catchy first sentence, but you should avoid too much humor or zaniness. If you are applying for a job in an industry that is a bit more informal â€" say, a tech startup company â€" you can get a little bit more creative. Your tone can be more lighthearted, and you can include some creative examples. If you’re applying for a job in a visual, creative field, consider showing your personality through the form of your letter. You might include bullet points, or even a visual (such as an infographic). You can include some of these nontraditional elements in your resume too. Keep It Professional   No matter how much of your personality you decide to put into your cover letter, keep the letter professional. It needs to be well written and error free. It also needs to stay focused on the main topic: why you are a terrific fit for the job. Don’t Go Negative Some people try to add personality by using phrases like “I know you hate reading cover letters, but…” or “I know I am one of many candidates, but…” Avoid any phrases that sound negative. Also, avoid phrases that imply you know how the hiring manager feels. You don’t actually know whether he or she hates reading cover letters, and you don’t know how many candidates applied for the job. Focus on the positive, and don’t make assumptions about the hiring manager, the job, or the company. Identifying a toxic work environment before you accept a job

Identifying a toxic work environment before you accept a job Identifying a toxic work environment before you accept a job As the year goes on, many people are thinking about making a move in the job market. In addition to looking for more compensation, advancement opportunities, or a change of place, job seekers these days are paying close attention to company culture - for good reason. No matter how great the title, the pay, or the role, if a company’s culture is toxic, you will regret taking the job.Cultures are all different, but in almost all cases a great culture is one where the company’s mission is reflected in the behaviors exhibited by employees day-to-day. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of businesses, and I have seen that too often reality falls short of public image. I even know of several examples where expectations set during the interview process were shattered the minute the employee started work.Fortunately, it is possible to spot a toxic culture in advance and save yourself from a bad career move. Here are five signs that a prospective workplace mig ht be toxic:1. Reviews are inconsistentJob sites like Glassdoor and Indeed collect and publish company reviews and rank companies by culture - but look for more than just high marks. Check for consistency in the pros and cons listed to get a feel for the culture. When you look at the cons, look for patterns - especially related to the behavior of the CEO and upper management. Gloss over personal complaints and watch for posts such as, “The CEO doesn’t trust anyone,” or “Anyone here that speaks up is walked to the door.” If you read those comments again and again, run.You might also see a string of consistently bad, detailed reviews followed by several glowing comments by people who can’t seem to come up with a con. This is a sign upper management has been posting comments to try to clean things up and is a major red flag.2. Vision and core values are ‘wall art’You want to work for a company with a clear mission and values. If the company doesn’t have any statement of this kind, that can spell trouble. But it’s also a concern when a company’s values are nothing but wall art. To find out if that’s the case, ask questions in your interview about values and mission.Do people know what they are without looking them up? Does anyone mention the subject to you? Also, ask if the company’s awards and recognition are based on values. Such questions can help you discover if you’re dealing with a company that says one thing and does another.3. Feedback is not encouraged or even discouragedGreat companies regularly ask their employees for feedback -  and act on it to make the company better. Look for how feedback is discussed in reviews and ask about it in your interviews. What are some examples of things the company has changed based on feedback? What do you think would happen if you e-mailed the CEO with a suggestion?Watching how interviewers respond to these questions in the first few seconds will give you the answer you need. If they strugg le to reply, beware.4. Transparency and trust are lackingMore and more information is public these days, and companies that share their ups and downs transparently are valued for getting their employees involved in understanding the goals and the mechanics of the business. Conversely, companies that keep everything under wraps are typically the ones where unpleasant surprises eventually emerge. For example, I recently saw a company doing a press release about all its hiring plans and spinning a very positive story to its employees about growth; at the same time, it was conducting two rounds of layoffs. Employees quickly lost trust and defected.Companies and managers that are tight-lipped about metrics and financials also tend to have the mentality that “it’s our money, not yours.” Wouldn’t you rather work at a company designed to benefit everyone?5. Family has a heavy hand in the businessIdeally, there should be checks and balances in any business, and family enterprises can lack these. So, be careful. When a husband/wife team are at the top or an extended family is forming the leadership team, it can be hard for employees to debate or challenge decisions. Imagine trying to take a complaint about your boss to his wife, the CEO.In many cases, if you are not part of the family, opportunities for advancement are limited. Since it’s possible to go to work for a family business unknowingly, do your research.Working at a company with a toxic culture can make it miserable to get out of bed every day and go to work - and life is too short for that. So, take some time to do your homework on company culture before accepting any new role.Robert Glazer is the founder and CEO of Acceleration Partners and the author of the international bestselling book Performance Partnerships.
